Influence of physically demanding occupations on the development of osteoarthritis of the hip: a systematic review

Abstract: Background Hip osteoarthritis (HOA) is a disabling disease affecting around 33 million people worldwide. People of working age and the elderly are at increased risk of developing HOA and the disease is associated with high costs at individual and societal levels due to sick leaves, job loss, total hip replacements and disability pension. This systematic review evaluated the influence of physically demanding occupations on the development of HOA in men. Methods … Show more

“…There is ample epidemiologic evidence that occupations with highly physical workloads-for example, within agriculture, fishery, or forestry-involving manual labor, such as lifting and carrying heavy items, climbing stairs, or working in kneeling positions, are associated with increased risk for knee OA and hip OA [50].…”

“…Various studies show a positive relationship between prolonged lifting and carrying of heavy loads or physically demanding work in general, and the risk of developing HOA [ 15 17 ]. In a previous systematic review, we found that there is a strong association between occupational exposure to other physically demanding ergonomic risk factors, such as force exertion, tiring posture, repetitiveness, lifting, kneeling and/or squatting, and climbing, and HOA among men [ 18 ]. Although there are known differences between men and women in the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders and pain [ 19 ], resulting healthcare use, and work disability [ 5 , 20 ], there is limited and inconsistent evidence linking occupational exposures to HOA [ 13 , 21 , 22 ].…”
