A series of observational bioassays were conducted to investigate the behavioural responses of the onion thrips, Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), to an application of a secondary plant compound to two different host plants with dissimilar leaf surface characteristics. Eugenol, a phenylpropanoid compound known to deter feeding and oviposition of the onion thrips, was applied to leek (Allium porrum L.) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) at 1% concentration. Using a video system and special software for computing observational data, influences of this plant compound on the behaviour of T. tabaci females were evaluated. Eugenol treatment significantly prolonged the time periods thrips spent being inactive and moving across the treated leek or cucumber surface. The feeding periods on leek leaves treated with eugenol were clearly shorter compared to periods on untreated leek. The behaviours related to oviposition on leaves from both host species treated with eugenol were slightly reduced. T. tabaci females avoided direct contact with eugenol particularly when applied to leek, showing significantly lower contact duration compared to an untreated surface. This shows that behaviourmodifying secondary compounds such as eugenol may be used in various strategies and may contribute to the enhancement of current biological control measures and/or form novel components of Integrated Pest Management strategies.

The aim of the present research work was to investigate the effect of orange and cinnamon oil on the occurrence and harmfulness of Thrips tabaci Lind on onion. In 2014, the nonchemical treatment was made with Prev-B2 (the concentration of 0.4%), which contains: 4.2% of orange oil, 2.1% of boron and product Canol 70% p/p exstract of Cinnamomum zeylanicum. In 2015, only Prev-B2 product was used. The standard sprayer was used and the treatments were done: twice in 2014 and three times in 2015. The thrips were collected directly from the leaves, using standard sweeping nets. The plants were examined to find the leave damages caused by feeding thrips. In 2014, Thrips tabaci was recorded from 11 June to 19 August, whereas in 2015 from 24 June to 4 August. Over two years of observations, the highest number of thrips was collected from onion growing on control plots (not treated with any preparation). Also, the mean percentage of areas damaged on the onion leaves was significantly higher on control plots than on plots treated with cinnamon oil in 2014 and orange oil in 2015.

2003, six Weld experiments were conducted at three olive groves of southern Spain in order to compare the eVects of two types of ethylene treatments (sprayed and diVusers) on the olive losses caused by the olive moth (Prays oleae Bern.) as well as on the activity and eVectiveness of oofagous predators. Both treatments showed to be eVective to control the pest; in the two years studied the mean reduction in Wnal infestation due to ethylene was of 35% with respect to the controls trees, and none aVected negatively the action of natural predators of P. oleae. In addition, the use of diVusers set on the trees at the end of Xowering period will help the farmers to overcome the problems of determination of optimum time for sprayed treatments of ethylene.
