Influence of precipitation and deep saline groundwater on the hydrological systems of Mediterranean coastal plains: a general overview

Abstract: The increasing water demand is a concern affecting many regions in the Mediterranean Basin. To overcome this situation rim countries resorted during the last decades to a massive mobilization of their water resources, often resulting in excessive water exploitation. In such a context, understanding the effects of present recharge and aquifer salinization is crucial for correct water management. Understanding the present hydrogeological situation of coastal plains requires the knowledge of both their past morph… Show more

“…and high amount of chlorite and fluoride indicates residual brines, probably due to a dissolution of interstitial seawater residue, or connate waters occurrence. This saline water is emerging mixed with infiltrating meteoric waters, and after having leached the upper part of the brines out from the sediments, this process is well referenced around the Mediterranean basin [66][67][68].…”

“…Saline paleo-water uprising into aquifers is a hydrogeological process controlled by the geological and structural setting of the area, and the mechanisms are often not fully understood (Barberio et al 2021;Conti et al 2000;Grobe and Machel 2002;Petitta et al 2011;Re and Zuppi 2011;Schwartz and Muehlenbachs 1979;Yechieli and Sivan 2010). While down-flowing fluids may be of meteoric origin, uprising fluids may connect the lowermost parts of an aquifer with the surface.…”

“…In arid and semi-arid areas, groundwater serves as a substantial part of the total water resources used for drinking and irrigation purposes (Wang & Cheng, 1999;Llamas & Martinez-Santos, 2005;Re & Zuppi, 2011;Keesari, 2014). In the past few years, an increase of groundwater usage due to expansion in development activities took place because of increased population as well as water scarcity (Omar & Moussa, 2016;Clemens et al, 2020).…”
