Influence of preoperative docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil on the incidence of complications after esophagectomy for resectable advanced esophageal cancer

Abstract: A limited number of patients with resectable advanced esophageal cancer can be cured by surgery alone. Although a regimen that consists of docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil (DCF) is a potential preoperative chemotherapy (PCT) option for squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus, the influence of DCF on subsequent esophagectomies remains unclear. A total of 80 patients who received preoperative DCF chemotherapy, and 174 patients who did not receive any preoperative treatment were retrospectively analyzed.… Show more

“…In general, chemotherapy worsen patients' nutritional condition due to its adverse gastrointestinal effects [15]. Although some studies have demonstrated significant decreases of various nutritional parameters such as albumin, pre-albumin, and transferrin due to preoperative chemotherapy in cancers of the digestive tract [16,32], the influence of NAC on the nutritional status of patients with breast cancer has remained unclear. In the present study, we observed significant decreases in PNI and serum albumin level and increases in NLR after NAC.…”

“…Although detailed data on the nutritional status of patients were not evaluated in this study, several studies have shown a significant reduction in nutrition-related parameters, such as the obesity index, serum albumin, and hemoglobin in patients with esophageal cancer [ 22 , 23 ]. Chemotherapy can cause both deterioration of nutritional status due to toxicity and, conversely, improvement of nutritional status due to tumor shrinkage.…”

“…Chemotherapy can paradoxically cause both deterioration and improvement of the nutritional status due to toxicities and overall tumor reduction (26). Nutritional parameters, such as the body mass index, serum albumin, and hemoglobin following chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy are significantly reduced in patients with EC (24,27). Therefore, the differences of nutritional status immediately before undergoing NAC and surgery may accurately predict the long-term survival of patients receiving NAC.…”

“…Most of the NAC procedures were performed with the FP regimen according to JCOG 9907 (5). In the FP regimen, 80 mg/m 2 of cisplatin was administered on day 1, and 800 mg/m 2 of 5-fluorouracil was administered from day 1 to day 5 (24). Two courses of this regimen were conducted every 3 weeks.…”
