Influence of process conditions on the formation of 2–4 ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the pyrolysis of polyvinyl chloride

Abstract: Municipal solid waste (MSW) contains significant amounts of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The reactivity of PVC may form polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during the pyrolysis of MSW, which can become a key challenge during the development of pyrolysis technologies. However, there is very limited work in relation to the influence of pyrolysis process conditions in terms of temperature and heating rate on PAHs formation during pyrolysis of PVC. In this work, the formation of 2-4-ring PAHs from the pyrolysis of… Show more

“…In this way, one of the most recent studies was carried out by 59 Zhou et al(2016) to evaluate the effect of temperature and heating rate on 2-4 ring polycyclic 60 aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), gases and HCl formation during the pyrolysis of polyvinyl 61 chloride (PVC) in a laboratory fixed bed reactor. From the results, they concluded that the increase 62 of temperature produced a rise in gases and PAHs yield and a decrease in the HCl formation.…”

“…The variation of PAHs concentration in WTPO depended on the rubber components used for tire manufacture and the pyrolysis condition 24,51‐52 . Zhou et al 52 reported that the amount of PAHs formation during pyrolysis of polyvinyl chloride was influenced by the heating rate. The slow pyrolysis performed using a low heating rate (10°C/min) generated the total 2 to 4 ring PAHs content ca.…”

“…PAHs and dioxins are formed in significantly lesser amounts under these conditions (Hu et al, 2019;Zhou et al, 2016). Furthermore, avoiding the use of certain feedstocks such as chlorine containing plastics, or copper containing materials can reduce the amounts of dioxins produced by the incomplete dehydrochlorination and de novo synthesis pathways respectively (Huang and Buekens, 1995;Zhou et al, 2016). PAHs can also be reduced through avoiding the use of certain feedstocks, mainly plastics (L. Zhou et al, 2015).…”
