Influence of process parameters on scale reduction with H2

Abstract: A new pickling method that reduces the metal oxide on steel strip using H 2 has been studied through an extensive campaign of experimental tests. The process, referred to as 'acid free pickling', is environmentally friendly and does not use acid. It is most suitable for application to hot rolled low carbon steel strip. Experimental studies are in progress to validate the application of hydrogen on different metals. A elongation, % R el yield strength, N mm 22 R m max, ultimate tensile strength, N mm 22 ß

“…1,2 Under the increasing pressure of environmental protection, considerable studies have been done on this green descaling technology in recent years. [3][4][5][6][7][8] Reduction temperature and reducing gas composition are the most important two parameters for the oxide scale reduction. Primavera et al 7 and Tan et al 4 independently reported the influence of reducing gas composition and reaction temperature on the scale reduction by measuring the thickness of reduced scale.…”

“…Hot-rolled steel strip is usually descaled before galvanizing. At present, the main way to remove the oxide layer is pickling [5][6][7]. However, pickling will cause serious environmental pollution [8][9][10].…”

“…Hudson 9 reported firstly the feasibility of descaling of hot rolled band by hydrogen or carbon. Thereafter, Shi et al 10 and Primavera et al 11 independently reported the reduction in oxide scale on hot rolled strip by hydrogen and carbon monoxide. However, hot dip galvanising was not involved in their research.…”
