Influence of rapeseed meal, whole rapeseed, and soybean meal on fatty acid composition and cholesterol content of muscle and adipose tissue from ram lambs

Abstract: Twenty-four Suffolk x Hampshire ram lambs (average 46 kg) were assigned to one of three diets containing rapeseed meal (RM), soybean meal (SBM), or whole rapeseed-soybean meal (RSSBM) as the protein source. Diets contained 75% roughage, 14% CP and 2.0 Mcal of ME/kg and lambs were allowed ad libitum access to diets for 35 d. Lipid composition of the longissimus, semimembranosus, and triceps brachii muscles and their corresponding s.c. adipose tissue was determined by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC). The total l… Show more

“…The ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated FA was higher for extruded than nonextruded seed, but the effect tended (P = 0.10) to be greater for SB than CA as shown by the interaction between seed and extrusion. In general, differences in FA composition of adipose tissue (data not shown) among treatments were similar to those observed in lean tissue although changes were more important in adipose than in lean tissue as previously reported by Solomon et al (1991).…”

“…Consequently, in experiments in which diets were modified to include up to 18% canola seed (Solomon et al 1991;Lough et al 1992;Rule et al 1994;McAllister et al 1999), only minor changes in fatty acid profiles were achieved. By comparison, the dietary treatments in the present study were more extreme (e.g., 95% CS), and the lambs' fatty acid composition was markedly influenced (Table 5).…”

“…However, other benefits may offset this potential for reduced fibre digestion. Adding 6.5% rapeseed to the diet was found to reduce the cholesterol content of lamb (Solomon et al 1991), and canola seed added at 10% of dietary DM for cattle increased the longchain unsaturated fatty acid content in beef (Hussein et al 1996), due to the high oleic acid (C 18:1 ) content of rapeseed and canola. Mattson and Grundy (1985) reported a lower incidence of atherosclerosis associated with decreased dietary cholesterol and increased levels of long-chain unsaturated fatty acids.…”
