Influence of Reaction System Properties on the Energy Saving Potential of the Reactive Dividing‐Wall Column: Separation Properties

Abstract: The reactive dividing-wall column (RDWC) is an example of extensive process integration. Recently, an energy saving potential of 23 % for the RDWC for an exemplary reaction system has been reported. However, little is known so far whether this magnitude represents a typical value and how the reaction system properties affect the energy saving of the RDWC. Clearly, a prerequisite for the industrial application of this apparatus is a profound understanding of the process and a quick assessment of the energy savi… Show more

“…Finally, the vapor distribution in the dividing‐wall section is addressed. Simulation studies proved the great influence of the vapor distribution on the energy efficiency of an RDWC , . Therefore, a precise modeling of the vapor distribution, also called vapor split (VS), especially for the dynamic case is important.…”

“…Kiss gave an extensive review about the production of biofuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel using the RDWC which is also well‐known for reducing energy requirement and costs as compared to the reactive distillation (RD) unit , . Most of the work reported in literature emphasizes the comparative assessment of the RDWC with conventional process alternatives to establish the merits of this technology . The design of an RDWC was reported by a few researchers , .…”

“…They believed that the advantage of this new integrated design was the ability to overcome vapor‐liquid equilibrium (VLE) and chemical equilibrium limitations. Fieg and Schröder determined the influence of the separation performance of the reaction system on the energy‐saving potential systematically. In 2009, Hernandez et al studied steady and dynamic simulations of the RDWC for the esterification of EtOH and acetate to form EA.…”
