Influence of recycled polystyrene beads on cement paste properties

Abstract: Abstract. In order to keep up with the requirements of sustainable development, there is a growing interest towards reducing the energy consumption in the construction and rehabilitation of buildings and the promotion of recycling waste in building materials. The use of recycled polystyrene beads in cement-based materials composition constitutes a solution to improve the insulation in buildings. This allows also limiting landfill by reusing the polystyrene waste. The aim of this study is to compare some proper… Show more

“…We begin with the prediction of the wetting and drying cycles for Polystyrene. This test was carried out using the results with Polystyrene concrete characterized by Maaroufi et al (2018Maaroufi et al ( , 2021, where the material was subjected to different values of relative humidity from 0 to 100 % with increment of 10%. Between two increments, the stability of the mass of the absorbed water content was sought.…”

“…The main adsorption curve was determined by fitting experimental values with the adsorption state using the parameters of the VAN-GENUCHTEN model. The latter requires the value of the porosity, which is determined using an empirical equation, and it turns out to be equal to p60% (Maaroufi et al, 2018). The fitted parameters of model ( 11) for Polystyrene concrete are presented in Table 1.…”

“…Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is one of such waste materials. [1] The Expanded Polystyrene is a chemically stable, low density foam which can be used in concrete. The polystyrene beads are smooth, round in shape, and can be used in mortar or concrete to form lightweight concrete with different densities [2].…”
