Influence of relaxation frequency on membrane fouling control in submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (SAnMBR)

Abstract: A B S T R A C TThe effect of different intermittent filtration modes on membrane fouling was investigated in a submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor treating palm oil mill effluent. The filtration was operated at the range of supra critical conditions (permeate flux equal to 20 L m À2 h À1 ), and the submersed membranes were continuously cleaned by gas injection and intermittent periods of relaxation. Four conditions of relaxation (S1: 240 s filtration/30 s relaxation, S2: 480 s filtration/30 s relaxation, S… Show more

“…According to Annop et al [201], prolonged filtration-relaxation under anaerobic condition expedites the formation of biofilm on the membrane. This is because of the massive transportations of foulants towards the membrane surface, and this often resulted in high polarization [174,202,203].…”

“…This is because as the activated sludge aged (SRT), the viscosity increases and the foulants such as particulates, EPS and SMP easily get polarized on the membrane to form cake layer [206,207]. However, some of the noticeable approach used to mitigate fouling in AnMBR system includes BAF [62] and intermittent frequent filtration-relaxation [201] which have presented some improvement in terms of steady filtration and pollutants removals, particularly the COD and TSS.…”

“…Backflushing has become one of the standard procedures integrated with any crossflow filtration system for oily wastewater separation [24]. It can also be coupled with a pressure relaxation process or intermittent filtration to combat fouling as in activated sludge membrane bioreactor (MBRs) [25][26][27]. In this process, water reclamation is achieved by the settling of the sludge [25][26][27].…”
