Influence of restorative material translucency on the chameleon effect

Abstract: Blending of artificial restoration materials to the natural tooth is challenging. Beyond just color, optical properties, particularly translucency, substantially influence the final appearance. The more chameleon effect that the restorative materials exhibit, the more natural looking restorations. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of restorative material translucency on the chameleon effect. Five types of resin composite in three different shades as well as one shade of conventional gla… Show more

“…Bühl, Germany) was used, along with black plasticine (Jovi, Barcelona, Spain) as backing with the CIE values: L * = 25.87, a * = −1.12, and b * = 0.95. The calculations were carried out according to the CIELAB color system 46 . The CIE coordinates were determined, the measurements were repeated three times for each specimen and the average result was recorded.…”

“…The success of the semidirect technique hinges on meticulous attention to the veneer's intaglio surface treatment, including chemical and mechanical steps, careful adhesive system selection, and the choice of resin cement [25]. Sandblasting with aluminum oxide, followed by silane-coupling agent application, optimizes the bonding interface between the resin composite veneer and the resin cement [32].…”

“…Value, chroma, and hue are fundamental color dimensions in dental practice. A tooth's appearance is influenced by interactions with light, including absorption, transmission, reflection, refraction, and scattering [25].…”

“…So far, this multilayering restorative treatment entails an accurate shade selection along with technically higher skills that frequently raise the working time and cost as well [ 41 ]. Therefore, in order to alleviate the treatment intricacy and to improve efficiency, the word “chameleon effect” (blending effect) illustrates the capability of material to attain a shade identical to adjacent tooth structure [ 42 ]. This ability of a material has facilitated the recognition of innovative dental composites that makes determination of shades easy.…”
