Influence of ROS on Ovarian Functions

Abstract: High level of ROS Reactive Oxygen Species , due to an increased production of oxidant species and/or a decreased efficacy of antioxidant system, can lead to oxidative stress OS an emerging health risk factor involved in the aging and in many diseases, either in humans or in animals. ROS are a double-edged sword -they serve as key signal molecules in physiological processes, but also have a role in pathological processes involving the female reproductive tract.ROS affect multiple physiological processes in repr… Show more

“…ROS levels may usually be related to the GSH levels, which have an important task into biological processes including DNA and protein synthesis, cellular protection against oxidative stress and cell proliferation throughout embryonic events (García‐Giménez et al, ; Timme‐Laragy et al, ). In the current research, the ROS and GSH levels were not correlated probably due to another pathway through different antioxidants enzymes such as Cu‐Zn and Mn‐superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD and MnSOD) (Ciani, Cocchia, d’Angelo, & Tafuri, ; Klisic, Kotur‐Stevuljevic, Kavaric, Martinovic, & Matic, ).…”

“…The oxidative stress results in damages in lipid metabolites, DNA damage, altered gene expression and apoptosis [14,69]. Furthermore, a study by Ciani et al stated that the formation of atretic follicles (follicles that undergo atresia from various stages) is due to the accumulation of toxic metabolites resulting from oxidative stress [70]. This is reflected by high numbers of atretic follicles.…”

“…The presence of compounds, such as macamides and glucosinolates, which are hydrolisated to isothiocyanates by myrosinase, allows Maca to scavenge free radicals and protect cells from oxidative stress (OS). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced in different sites in mammalian bodies [11], and were found to accumulate during the normal testicular spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis [12]. Physiological low levels of ROS play an important role in processes such as capacitation, hyperactivation, acrosome reaction, and sperm-oocyte fusion, thus ensuring appropriate fertilization, whereas high levels of ROS may determine sperm pathologies, such as ATP depletion and loss of sperm motility and viability [13].…”
