2 Plant dry matter accumulation rate (DMAR), relative water content (RWC), electrolyte leakage percentage (ELP), chlorophyll content, osmotic adjustment ability (OAA), and osmotica accumulation in leaves of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) seedlings under different levels of dehydration and salinity stress induced by iso-osmotic PEG (polyethylene glycol) or sodium chloride (NaCl) were evaluated. Plants were subjected to four stress treatments for 10 days: −0.44 MPa PEG6000, −0.44 MPa NaCl, −0.88 MPa PEG6000, −0.88 MPa NaCl. Results showed that PEG and NaCl treatments decreased the plant's DMAR and RWC, and NaCl treatments had more severe inhibitory effect on the plants than PEG treatments. Leaf ELP in sunflower seedlings increased after NaCl and PEG treatments. However, leaf ELP under salt stress was higher than that under dehydration stress (PEG treatment). All stress treatments increased OAA in plant leaves. Leaf OAA was enhanced significantly as PEG concentration increases, while leaf OAA was less enhanced at higher concentration of NaCl. OAA of sunflower leaves under dehydration stress was due to an increase in potassium (K + ), calcium (Ca 2+ ), amino acid, organic acid, magnesium (Mg 2+ ), and proline content. OAA of sunflower leaves under moderate salt stress was owing to an increase in K + , chlorine (Cl − ), amino acid, organic acid, sodium (Na + ), and proline content, and was mainly due to an accumulation of K + , Cl − , Na + , and proline under severe salt stress.

Soil salinity and sodicity (alkalinity) are serious land degradation issues worldwide that are predicted to increase in the future. The objective of the present study is to distinguish the effects of NaCl and Na 2 CO 3 salinity in two concentrations on the growth, lipoxygenase (LOX) activity, membrane integrity, total lipids, yield parameters and fatty acids (FAs) composition of seeds of sunflower cultivar Sakha 53. Plant growth, LOX activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were reduced by salts stresses. On the contrary, salinity and alkalinity stress induced stimulatory effects on membrane permeability, leakage of UV-metabolites from leaves and total lipids of sunflower shoots and roots. Crop yield (plant height, head diameter, seed index and number of seeds for each head) that is known as a hallmark of plant stress was decreased by increasing concentrations of NaCl and Na 2 CO 3 in the growth media. Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) composition of salt-stressed sunflower seeds varied with different levels of NaCl and Na 2 CO 3 .

In this regard, the presowing treatment of proline is one of the alternative shotgun approaches to increase plant stress tolerance. A pot experiment was conducted at wire house of the National Research Centre, Dokki, Cairo, Egypt to elucidate the effect of pre-sowing seed treatment with proline (0, 2.5, 5 and 7.5 mM as P0, P1, P2 and P3, respectively) on growth, some biochemical attributes of two cultivars of sunflower plant (Helianthus annuus L.) plants under seawater stress (0.23, 3.13, 6.25 dS/m as tap water S0, S1 and S2, respectively). Plant samples were collected after 45 days from sowing. Results showed that increasing sea water concentration induced reduction in all growth parameters (plant height, number of leaves shoot fresh and dry weights/plant), photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoids), yield parameters (head diameter, seed weight/head and 100-seed weight), oil% and protein % of the yielded seeds of the two cultivars of sunflower plant compared with those of the untreated unstressed plants (S0). In contrast, increasing sea water stress led to increases in total phenolics, total soluble carbohydrate, free amino acids and proline contents. Special attention was paid to the effect of proline treatments on the salt stressed sunflower that stimulates plant salt tolerance via improving growth parameters, photosynthetic pigments, total soluble carbohydrate, free amino acids, proline contents. Meanwhile phenolic content decreased relative to their corresponding salinity controls. From these results, pre-sowing sunflower seed treatment with proline seem to enhance sunflower salt tolerance by amelioration of photosynthetic pigments, osmoprotectants of vegetative organs, hence improved plant growth and the preservation of a suitable plant water status under salinity conditions.
