Influence of Sand-Cement Ratio and Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer on the Basic Properties of Mortar Based on Water Film Thickness

Abstract: Previous studies demonstrated that water film thickness (WFT) is a key factor that affects the fluidity of mortar. Changes in the sand-cement (S/C) ratio and polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) dosage will affect the WFT. In this study, several mortar samples with different S/C ratios and different PCE dosages were prepared, and the basic properties of the mortar were measured. The results show that as the S/C ratio increases, the packing density of the mortar will decrease, the WFT will decrease, and the c… Show more

“…Comparing the effects of PCE, it can be found that, when the dosage is less than 0.3%, PCE has no significant effect on fluidity. The flow table test results were similar to the experimental conclusions of Zhang et al [33].…”

“…After thorough evaluation of the compatibility and interactions of the polymeric chemical additives and lime particles with the PCMs, the mortar formulation was refined. These preliminary studies on the interactions and stability of systems with the simultaneous presence of the superplasticizer and adhesion enhancer, along with a literature review [ 27 , 29 , 31 ], allowed for the simplification of the trial-and-error process in establishing the optimal formulation for PCM-bearing mortars intended for application as renders. In this way, the working ranges for each additive were defined, facilitating the initiation of experimentation and expediting the optimization process for the formulation in a more efficient and straightforward manner.…”

“…Previous research [ 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 ] has demonstrated that a polymer derivative of polycarboxylate ether can effectively serve as a superplasticizer, enhancing the workability of fresh mortar augmenting its fluidity. This obviates the necessity for excessive mixing water and allows for fine-tuning the paste’s fluidity to attain a more easily manageable consistency.…”

“…When the efficiency of the SP is high and/or the dosage is high (when a polycarboxylate-based SP is employed at high dosage), the problem of diminished cohesiveness becomes more severe [39,40]. To avoid this problem, the SP dose should exceed the amount that causes segregation [41,42].…”
