Influence of Seasons and Varieties on Vase Life of Gerbera (<i>Gerbera jamesonii</i> Hook.) Cut Flower

Abstract: Postharvest studies were carried out in three varieties of (Gerbera jamesonii Hook.) cvs. Primrose, Malibu and Sunway to find out the effect of growing seasons (autumn, winter and spring) on the vase life of cut flowers during September 2009 to March 2010. Laboratory experiments were carried out in controlled room having 18±2 o C temperature, 68±2% relative humidity and 100 lux light. The study revealed that the longest vase life was noticed in Sunway, followed by Primrose and Malibu. Regarding the season of p… Show more

“…In Australia, A. holosericea plants flower mainly from June to August and bear fruit from August to October (Marion, 1981). This interrelation of season and maturity is aligned with many other studies such as in leatherleaf fern (Poole et al, 1984) and Gerbera (Acharya et al, 2010). Other variables that may contribute to vase life variation in this study are features of the postharvest display environment, such as temperature, RH, and light intensity.…”

“…This superiority in vaselife may be due to the inherited trait of particular variety for better storage of photosynthates as indicated by the production of more number of leaves during its growth periods. It was observed previously in China aster [9], in gerbera [13].…”

“…The variation in vase life under different treatments can mainly refer to the type of cultivar used. A report stated that the cultivars managed vase life variation, with the increase in vase life of the gerbera cultivar also recorded with the lengthiest life than other studied cultivars (Acharya et al, 2010).…”
