Influence of short-term macronutrient deprivation in maize on photosynthetic characteristics, transpiration and pigment content

Abstract: The aim of the research was to compare the impact of short-term deprivation of selected macronutrients (Ca, K, Mg and P) on the photosynthetic characteristics, transpiration and pigment content in maize. The strongest inhibition of photosynthesis was caused by a deprivation of Mg, which was visible as a decrease in the photosynthetic and transpiration rates, stomatal conductance, photosystem II (PSII) performance, chlorophyll and flavonol content with a simultaneously increased content of anthocyanins. In the … Show more

“…The parameters ABS/CS0, TR0/CS0, ET0/CS0 and DI0/CS0 were analyzed via the energy pipeline leaf model of phenomenological fluxes using Biolyzer 4HP software ( Figure 4E-H). This model typically provides information on the flow of energy from the chlorophyll antenna molecules to the photosynthetic electron transport chain via the RCs of PSII [29,30]. The capability of the plants in each group for light absorption (ABS/CS0), trapping, electron transport (TR0/CS0), and dissipation per cross-section of PSII (DI0/CS0) are indicated by the sizes of the arrows in Figure 4.…”

“…Chlorophyll a fluorescence measurement is widely used in studies of photosynthetic processes [22,23], monitoring of plants abiotic stress responses see [24], nutrient status of plants [23,[25][26][27][28][29][30], plant breeding to select plants of high photosynthetic capacity [31,32], or in postharvest quality studies or assessments of horticultural and other crop plants [33].Evaluation of the LEDs quality that produces the best vigorous of tomato seedlings based on its physiological performance was the main aim of this work. This experiment was designed on the hypothesis that the response of the photosynthetic apparatus of tomato cultivars (Solanum lycopersicum var.…”

“…In turn, salinity stress decreased only the electron transport flux per cross section (ET O /CS) in sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor ) [ 92 ]. Furthermore, the macronutrient deprivation in maize ( Zea mays ) had an impact on the same OIJP parameters and decrease in ABS/CS, TR 0 /CS, ET 0 /CS and DI 0 /CS values were observed [ 93 ]. Interestingly, in our study, the lower concentration (15 µM) of MeJA applied for 120 h caused a 10% increase in the value of RC/CS compared to the control plants.…”
