Influence of size, sex and age on venom yield of Bothrops leucurus (Serpentes, Viperidae) in captivity conditions

Abstract: Snake venom is an expensive metabolic weapon used for digestion and defense. Detailed studies on the production of venoms are important for the manufacture of antivenoms and for the therapeutic management of snakebites. Bothrops leucurus is one of the snakes of medical importance responsible for a large number of accidents in Northeast Brazil. To establish the correlation between Bothrops leucurus venom (Blv) yield, under captive conditions, and the morphological characteristics (body mass and length), sex and… Show more

“…Venom production is influenced by factors such as size, sex, and age, with larger snakes and adult females, like Bothrops leucurus , displaying increased venom production compared to smaller snakes and adult males. Additionally, older animals may not be suitable for antivenom production due to their decreased ability to mount effective immune responses [ 42 , 43 ].…”

“… May struggle to completely neutralize all snake species or venom types due to the specific targeting of venom components or toxins. [ 17 , 27 , 42 , 114 ] Regulatory Approval Typically has a more straightforward and well-established regulatory approval process. May face a more intricate and time-consuming regulatory approval process, potentially causing delays in availability.…”

“…The fang length of venomous snakes ranges between 5.0 cm in certain vipers ( Bitis gabonica, Bitis rhinoceros ) to as little as 0.2 cm in some elapids ( Pseudonaja guttata) ( Mirtschin et al, 2017 ). There are studies related to fang length, inter-fang distance, and venom yield for some medically relevant snakes available, but additional measurements would be useful to compare these attributes for regional groupings of medically relevant snakes( Braga et al, 2022 ; de Roodt et al, 2016 ; de Roodt et al, 1998 ; Gao et al, 2019 ; Hayes et al, 2017 ; Mirtschin et al, 2017 ; Mirtschin et al, 2002 ; Morrison et al, 1983 ; Nascimento da Costa et al, 2020 ). The amount of venom delivered as well as the depth of tissue penetration may affect the pre-hospital treatment of SBE in a variety of ways.…”
