Influence of Small Amounts of ABS and ABS-MA on PA6 Properties: Evaluation of Torque Rheometry, Mechanical, Thermomechanical, Thermal, Morphological, and Water Absorption Kinetics Characteristics

Abstract: In this work, polyamide 6 (PA6) properties were tailored and improved using a maleic anhydride-grafted acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer (ABS-MA). The PA6/ABS-MA blends were prepared using a co-rotational twin-screw extruder. Subsequently, the extruded pellets were injection-molded. Blends were characterized by torque rheometry, the Molau test, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), impact strength, tensile strength, Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), … Show more

“…50,51 Therefore, the procedure of grafting resulted in an improvement in interfacial adhesion and the dispersed phase refinement contributed to an increase in the mechanical performance of the grafted samples. 52 Interestingly, we soaked the section in water 6 h; after drying, the aggregation structures of PA56-2.0 section disappeared (Figure 3f), which verified that the PPMG directly blended in PA56 was washable.…”

“…The impact strength of the PPMG/EMA system is similar to pure PA56, considering experimental error margins; in addition, it is worth noting that the impact toughness of grafted samples was improved significantly; especially, the PA56-g-1.0 obtained an optimum impact toughness with 48% higher than pure PA56. These results indicate that the system of PA56/EMA/PPMG has occurred reactive compatibility …”

“…Therefore, elastomers must be altered to strengthen their adhesion to PA6 and increase the composite’s notch impact strength. Currently, the most popular method for toughening PA6 involves the addition of active groups, such as maleic anhydride, and epoxy groups to rubber elastomers, which then react with PA6 terminal amino or carboxyl groups to produce block or graft copolymers and compatibilize in situ.…”

“…In general, Nylon 6 has high rigidity, good abrasion resistance, high tensile strength, high fatigue strength, high service temperature, and good toughness above its T g . These outstanding properties justify its many applications, such as in mechanical parts, electronic components, and parts for the automotive industry [ 14 , 15 , 16 ]. Nylon 6 is considered a pseudo-ductile polymer, having high resistance to crack initiation compared with brittle polymer matrices.…”
