The role of sports in education has been very evident across various educational institutions. Based on the previously conducted studies, it has been recognized as a builder of solid intellect for students. However, only a few investigations were found concerning the role of SPS in the development of student-athletes’ athletic activities and performance in Physical education in a local setting here in the Philippines; hence, the conduct of the study regarding this matter is highly recommended. In connection to this, the present study aims to determine the role of the Special Program in Sports (SPS) in the athletic activities and performance of student-athletes in physical education. This study utilized a self-made questionnaire where inputs were taken from the related literature and studies reviewed and adapted to the Coaching Behavior Scale for Sport (CBS-S). Moreover, part of the questionnaire dealt with the coaching commitment and physical development of student-athletes involving the 4Cs (caring, character, competence, and connection). Descriptive and regression analyses were utilized to interpret data gathered from the respondents. The results have shown that the level of SPS was found to be very high in terms of instructor/coach, sports event, sports facilities, and training schedule. Also, the level of athletic activities was reported as high concerning training performance, regular sports participation, and health status, and very high in regards to theoretical knowledge, athletic potential, focus and discipline, resiliency and humility, and harmony and unity. SPS has been found to have no significant effect on the athletic activities and performance of student-athletes. Recommendations for the improvement of coaches and student-athletes, and future research to support the findings of this study are presented.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of extracurricular activities on academic performance of two selected secondary schools of Male. The study was carried out utilizing quantitative research design. The study attempted to find out whether there was any difference in academic performance between the students who spent more than five hours and less than five hours for extracurricular activities, whether there was any difference in academic performance between the students who participate and do not participate in extracurricular activities, whether there was any difference in academic performance between the students who participate in sport, pro-social activities and clubs and whether there was any difference in academic performance between female and male students who participate in extracurricular activities. This study's sample frame comprised all ninth-grade pupils. Two hundred and sixty-nine students from grade nine of both the schools made up the study group. Each student completed a questionnaire which gathered information about their participation in extracurricular activities. Using specific criteria students who were involved and those who do not involved were found. The differences between groups were analyzed statistically using Mann Whitney U test for the first, third and last research question and Kruskul test for the second research question. Results of data analyses indicated that no significant differences were found between the students who spent more than five hours‟ for extracurricular activities and those who spent less than five hours, between the students who participate in sport, pro-social activities, and clubs and between female and male students who participate in extracurricular activities. However, there was a significant difference in academic performance between the students who participate and who do not participate in extracurricular activities.

Fund as part of resources acts as a great pillar towards implementing sports activities in school. The aim of this study was to determine the role of secondary school administrators in appropriating fund for sports. The research was informed by a multiple embedded case study of a qualitative research approach. The findings revealed that school administrators play a crucial role to secure funds with the use of different strategies of getting funds to ensure the execution of sports activities; appropriated funds are from the capitation grants from the government, school self-reliance projects, personal contributions from head of schools and management team, contributions from sponsors and non-governmental institutions as well as support from the community members. The study implies that school administrators should ensure appropriate deployment of the received money from the government, sponsors, and other sports stakeholders as well as having effective mechanism of purchasing fund and make evaluation on the uses of fund received. Additionally, school administrators should be more creative on organizing different sports events, preparing different forums, and request fund support for sports activities.
