Influence of steroid hormones on ventricular repolarization

Abstract: QT interval prolongation, corrected for heart rate (QTc), either spontaneous or drug-induced, is associated with an increased risk of torsades de pointes and sudden death. Women have longer QTc than men and are at higher risk of torsades de pointes, particularly during post-partum and the follicular phase. Men with peripheral hypogonadism have longer QTc than healthy controls. The role of the main sex steroid hormones has been extensively studied with inconsistent findings. Overall, estradiol is considered to … Show more

“…Laboratoire d'h ematologie, CHU Reims, EA3801 -Reims (France) Introduction: The beneficial effects of antiplatelet agents have been attributed to a decrease in platelet aggregability and intravascular coagulation. However, experimental and clinical reports have suggested a "non-P2Y12-mediated hypothesis" for the effect of ticagrelor [1]. Thus, this work aimed to study the protective effects of ticagrelor on endothelial cells during hypoxia and to elucidate the underlying mechanism.…”

“…Empagliflozin, a selective sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor, prevents the high glucose-induced senescence in cultured endothelial cells: role of NADPH oxidase and cyclooxygenases S Khemais Laboratoire de biophotonique et pharmacologie (LBP), Faculty of Pharmacy, UMR7213 -Illkirch (France) Introduction: The high glucose (HG)-induced endothelial dysfunction has been suggested to promote cardiovascular diseases in patients with type 2 diabetes by inducing premature endothelial senescence [1]. Endothelial senescence is characterized by the down-regulation of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS)-mediated formation of NO, a potent vasoprotective factor [2].…”

“…The agreement between the two methods was examined using the measurements made by a cardiologist, expert in QT interval measurement (JES) [9][10]. For a pedagogic purpose, a fifth-year medical student with no previous experience of ECG interval measurements (VS) was trained to QT interval assessment and his measurements were compared to those of the expert reader.…”
