Influence of Substituents in Nitrogen Atoms in Macrocyclic Polyamine Incorporated into Poly(vinyl chloride) Matrix Liquid Membrane on Its Potentiometric Response to Neutral Phenols

Abstract: Here we present the results of a study on the generation of the negative potentiometric response of solvent polymeric membranes based on macrocyclic ditopic hexaamines in the presence of neutral dihydroxybenzene isomers. The pH‐SEM profiles of the membranes investigated demonstrate a high affinity for proton uptake from the aqueous solution by host polyamine molecules. The substituents of the amine nitrogen atoms in host molecules strongly influence on the potentiometric anionic signal generation of membranes … Show more

“…A similar phenomenon was observed in the case of ortho-nitrophenol. Similar tendencies concerning respectively polyamine and calix [4]pyrrole membranes in the presence of the phenolic guests was observed by Umezawa et al [1,2] and Radecki et al [3,4] Generally, the sensitivity sequence of the signal generated by membranes modified with calix [4]pyrrole was as follows (both, at pH 4.0 and 6.0): Similar tendencies concerning respectively polyamine and calix [4]pyrrole membranes in the presence of the phenolic guests was observed by Umezawa et al [1,2] and Radecki et al [3,4] Generally, the sensitivity sequence of the signal generated by membranes modified with calix [4]pyrrole was as follows (both, at pH 4.0 and 6.0):…”

“…With decreasing pH value the membrane potential increased with a slope of ca. [1][2][3][4] The process observed was reversible and the changes of the potential value were 180 mV in the 9.0-3.5 pH range.…”

“…It has been already discovered by the potentiometric method that liquid membrane electrodes incorporating macrocyclic polyamines [26][27][28][29], calix [4]pyrroles [30][31][32][33] or corroles [34][35] upon stimulation with undissociated phenol derivatives generated potentiometric responses.…”
