Influence of surface energy parameters of dental self-adhesive resin cements on bond strength to dentin

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the surface energy parameters of dental self-adhesive resin cements (SRCs) and to measure their bond strength to dentin. Six dental SRCs (RelyX Unicem Clicker, RU; Maxcem Elite, ME; BisCem, BC; Clearfil SA Luting, SA; Multilink Speed, MS; seT PP, SP) and one resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RelyX Luting 2, RL; control) were tested. Smear layer-covered bovine dentin was used as bonding substrate. Using the dynamic sessile drop method, surface energy, surface energy… Show more

“…Furthermore, the decreased hydrophilicity of the RelyX U200 resin cement as compared to the Maxcem Elite resin (MCE group) seemed to result in more favorable bonding results. This suggests that hydrophilic components deteriorate the bond strength, and result in higher water absorption (19). In addition, the Scotchbond TM Universal adhesive used in the SBU group has an acidic pH which is able to partially demineralize dentin, leaving a significant number of hydroxyapatite crystals surrounding the collagen fibrils (22).…”

“…The total surface energy γ s was derived by the equation [7,14]: γ s = γ s LW + γ s AB = γ s LW + 2( γ s + γ s − ) 1/2 , where γ s AB is the acid/base component.…”

“…Adhesion is defined as an attraction between atoms and molecules at the contacting surfaces of different materials by several mechanical and physical processes and intermolecular forces [2,6,8]. The value of the work of adhesion depends on the surface energy of both connected materials [9][10][11][12]. Depending on the prevailing type of component of surface energy (dispersive or polar) the bonded surfaces will connect with dispersive interactions or acid-base interactions.…”

“…There are several methods of estimation of the solid surface energy. The most popular indirect method is contact angle measurement [10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. The use of different polar and apolar liquids enables determination of Lifshitz-van der Waals (γ s LW ) and acid-base (Lewis) (γ s ab ) components of solid surface free energy (γ s ).…”
