Influence of surface topography on the friction and dynamic characteristics of spur gears

Abstract: As an important excitation source of gear dynamic problems, the time-varying friction of tooth surface is closely related to its topography. Considering the friction characteristics of tooth surface is of great significance to improve the calculation accuracy of gear dynamic characteristics. In order to solve the problem that the variation of tooth friction coefficient was simplified too much in the previous gear dynamics research, the time-varying tooth friction coefficient is obtained by fitting the results … Show more

“…The functional group of parameters related to the material ratio curve affects wear and friction [23]. For example, Vmc (Core material volume) is the most relevant parameter to characterize the rolling process [38], or Vvv and Vvc (Core void volume) parameters are related to valleys of the surface, which reflect lubricant storage performance [23,42]. Moreover, Vvv and Vvc correlated with the friction coefficient of a rough contact interface [29].…”

“…Cao et al [30,31] established a tribo-dynamics model of bevel gears based on the theory of mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication and analyzed the effects of tribology properties on gear dynamics and contact fatigue by solving the lubrication characteristics of bevel gears. Recent studies [32,33] have investigated the influence of asperity distribution and other micro-surface topography on gear dynamics. Some new research [34][35][36] on surface texture and tribodynamics of journal bearings provides new ideas for subsequent work, in which we can delve into the discussion about the impact of surface texture during the analysis of gear tribo-dynamics.…”

“…Although the gear lubrication conditions could be improved by selecting the roughness direction and amplitude, it will make the processing complicated and high economic cost. The application of surface texturing technology, especially laser surface texturing (LST) in the field of friction and lubrication with its advantages of high efficiency and good manufacturability is gradually enhanced (Gachot et al, 2017;Holmberg and Erdemir, 2017;Li et al, 2020;Zhang et al, 2019). Surface texturing technology can reduce the friction and wear of materials and improve the mechanical properties of the base material, which is beneficial to improve the fatigue life of gears (Greco et al, 2011).…”
