INFLUENCE OF TEMPERATURE AND RELATIVE HUMIDITY ON SURVIVAL AND FECUNDITY OF PAURIDIA PEREGRIN A, A PARASITE OF MEALYBUGS AND ITS INTERACTIONS WITH PLANOCOCCUS CITRI

Abstract: Some biological aspects of the encyrtid parasite Pauridia peregrina Timberlake were studied. Non-ovipositing 9 9 lived longer than ovipositing9 9. Parasite survival was strongly affected by relative humidity. Females survived best at 21.5" and 92% r.h.; 41.0" and 45% r.h. caused 96.7% mortality within 3 hr. Total number of eggs laid was not influenced by 49---71% r.h. at 26.5 °. Lowering of the r.h. increased the proportion of the eggs laid on the first day to 91.1, 65.9 and 59.1%, respectively, at 49, 57, and… Show more

“…Decrease in female longevity with increase in temperature was also recorded in other encyrtids like C. peregrina (Goldberg, 1982), A. pseudococci (Avidov et al, 1967), C. pyrillae (Yadav and Chaudhary, 1986), L. dactylopii (Tingle and Copland, 1989) and C. truncatellum (Stoner and Weeks, 1974). The mean longevity of females declined gradually from a maximum of 42 days at 15°C to a minimum of 8 days at40°C.…”

“…This parasitoid is a solitary, thelytokous, proovigenic endopar-asitoid which completes its life cycle in approximately four weeks (Bartlett, 1977). Limited information on the reproductive biology of C. peregrinus is available (Gol'berg, 1982;Krishnamoorthy & Mani, 1989;Zinna, 1960), however, studies to quantify the host selection and oviposition behavior of C. peregrinus have not been conducted.…”
