Influence of the Extraction Method on the Quality and Chemical Composition of Walnut (Juglans regia L.) Oil

Abstract: The present study investigated and compared the quality and chemical composition of Moroccan walnut (Juglans regia L.) oil. This study used three extraction techniques: cold pressing (CP), soxhlet extraction (SE), and ultrasonic extraction (UE). The findings showed that soxhlet extraction gave a significantly higher oil yield compared to the other techniques used in this work (65.10% with p < 0.05), while cold pressing and ultrasonic extraction gave similar yields: 54.51% and 56.66%, respectively (p > 0.… Show more

“…This high value might result from the relatively high content of PUFA (39.4% of the sum of all fatty acids), as well as from the extraction method used to obtain the oil. [26] However, very similar values can be found in the literature for grapeseed oil (2.6-3.0 mEq O 2 kg −1 ). [27] In the case of the quality of vegetable oils, the most important factor is the quality of the raw material from which the oil is obtained.…”

“…Particularly important for this determination seems to be the oil extraction procedure. According to Elouafy et al [26] walnut oil obtained by the Soxhlet method was characterized by more than twice as high acidity (1.95% as oleic acid) than cold-pressed oil (0.76%). The determined iodine value, which is a good indicator of the degree of unsaturation of fatty acids in oils, is very similar to the values observed in L. angustifolius seed oil.…”

“…The emergence of resistant and biofilm-forming bacteria makes finding new antibacterial strategies an urgent need [38,39] . Essential oils contain many compounds mixed together and could be a promising alternative strategy in front of emerging resistance bacterial infection [40][41][42] . In this study, we verified the antibacterial activity of T. syriacus essential oil extracted from the peripheral region of Damascus against resistant bacteria clinically isolated.…”

“…In fact, walnuts (Juglans regia) are a great source of unsaturated fatty acids [23][24][25] , fiber, minerals (potassium, calcium, and magnesium) [26,27] , amino acids and proteins [28,29] , phenolic compounds and saponins [30][31][32] , as well as a variety of other compounds that make J. regia has a vast diversity of medicinal properties [33] . In addition, the phytochemicals present in plants like J. regia have been shown to have therapeutic effects, including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties [34] .…”
