Influence of the Network Modifier Content on the Bioactivity of Silicate Glasses

Abstract: The influence of the substitution of calcium oxide for sodium oxide in the composition of silica-based glasses on the in vitro bioactivity is presented. Valuable information on the active Si-O groups present in the glasses is obtained by Fourier Transform Raman and Infrared spectroscopies. In vitro test analysis by Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis show a correlation between the network disruption induced by the modifier type and the bioactive process. It is demonstrated that gla… Show more

“…This band is associated with a Si-O-2NBO stretching vibration of a Q 2 unit having two non-bridging oxygens [23]. Nevertheless, the presence of the Raman line at 425 cm À1 in the CaMg25 spectrum is interpreted as a signature of the symmetric stretch mode of regular ring structures in the glassy network [15,24].…”

“…Moreover, the band around 800 cm À1 is identified as the bending Si-O-Si vibration in which the oxygens move approximately at right angles to the Si-Si lines and in the Si-O-Si planes. Finally, near 460 cm À1 the rocking Si-O-Si vibration is located [15,18,19,21,24,[29][30][31][48][49][50][63][64][65][66][67].…”
