Influence of the Ring-Substitution on the Second Harmonic Generation of Chalcone Derivatives

Abstract: Several chalcone derivatives exhibiting second harmonic generation up to 5 times that of urea under IR-excitation have been synthesized by varying the substituents on both phenyl-rings.

“…There is currently much interest in organic NLO materials because of their large second-or third-order hyperpolarizabilities compared to inorganic NLO materials. Among the organic crystals reported for their second-harmonic generation (SHG), applications, Chalcone derivative are among the notable materials for their excellent blue light transmittance, good crystal stability, large nonlinear optical coefficients, and relatively short cutoff wavelengths of transmission [5][6][7][8][9].…”

“…The chalcone derivatives are newly developed organic crystals with nonlinear optical coefficients (Fichou, Watanabe, Takeda, Miyata, Goto & Nakayama, 1988). In order to explore the relationship between their structure and nonlinear optical properties, we synthesized a series of substi- (7) 119.5 (3) C(12)--C(11)--C(10) 120.5 (3) C(3)--C(4)--C (7) 123.1 (3) C(13)--C(12)--C(11) 120.5 (3)…”

“…It was also suggested by Zhao et al [17] and Wu et al [16] that electron donors, such as -OCH 3 , -CH 3 , -Cl, and -Br, are the best donor groups for enhancing SHG in chalcones. Several chalcone molecules have been synthesized by many researchers and their results on SHG properties reported [18][19][20].…”
