Influence of the Viscosity and the Surface Tension of Ophthalmic Vehicles on the Retention of a Tracer in the Precorneal Area of Human Eyes

Abstract: Multidose eye drops packages contain preservatives as required by the pharmacopoeiae. Most of the commonly used preservatives exhibit surface activity and they may disrupt the superficial lipid layer of the tear film. Consequently surfactants may have a negative influence on the tear film stability, the blinking rate and the wash out of a therapeutic agent instilled. The aim of the present word is to examine the influence of the surface tension of ophthalmic solutions on the retention of fluorescein in the pre… Show more

“…σ she ll is the surface tension of the shell. For free bubble without shell in 3.2% dextran solution [45], CTshe ll = 72 mN m −1 ; lipid shelled bubbles, σ she ll = 0. P a is the hydrostatic pressure outside the bubble (Pa = 101.3 kPa), and f is the ratio of the gas concentration in the bulk medium over that at saturation (degassed solution, f= 0).…”

“…For example, Hypotears ® is a hydrogel for the treatment of keratoconjunctivitis sicca. This formulation has good adhesive quality, excellent contact time, and Newtonian behavior, is an excellent wetting agent, and does not caused blurred vision, but caused discomfort in some cases when PVA was at 4.2% (Ludwig & Van Ooteghem, ).…”

“…For example, responses to ocular drugs have been shown to be influenced by age (Korczyn, 1975), iris colour (Emiru, 1971;Patil and Jacobowitz, 1974;Diehl etal., 1991), systemic health and disease status (Hreidarson, 1988: Gentile et a!,, 1994Kirvela et al, 1994;Maclean and Dhillon, 1993;Maillot era/., 1993;Berg era/., 1994;Liote and Osterland, 1994), ocular abnormalities (Mapstone and Clark, 1985;Lundvall and Zetterstrom, 1993;Barbur et al, 1994) and concurrent use of systemic drugs (Fraunfelder, 1989). Additionally, drug potency, concentration (Brown and Hanna, 1987;KeBler et al, 1991), viscosity, surface tension (Ludwig and Van Ooteghem, 1988), osmolarity (Benjamin and Hill, 1983), pH (Norn, 1988), preservatives (Green, 1992), volume (Craig and Griffiths. 1991), method of delivery (Halberg e/a/., 1975;Ibrahim etal,.…”
