Influence of Thermal Fiber Pretreatment on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of C/C‐SiC with Thermoplastic Polymer‐Derived Matrices

Abstract: Two thermoplastic matrices, polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polyetherimide (PEI), are examined in this work in terms of their suitability as carbon precursors for C/C‐SiC composites. The carbon fibers are pretreated between 400 and 1600 °C in nitrogen atmosphere to modify the surface functionality, which was characterized with XPS. An analysis of the C/C‐SiC composition shows an increasing SiC content as a function of the increased fiber pretreatment temperature and the polymer precursor. Bending tests of C/C‐… Show more

“…In the case of powder fillers, the easiest developed approach is to blend graphite with less reactive carbons or with inert powders such as SiC or ZrB 2 . For fibrous reinforcements, the main strategy is to coat fibers with protective interphases by liquid or vapor techniques . Although effective, these procedures are time consuming and expensive when applied to different geometries.…”

“…Thus, SiC plays an important role in improving the oxidation and ablation resistance of C/C composites. Furthermore, the introduction of SiC can significantly improve the mechanical properties of C/C composites …”

“…The degree of crystallinity I c was calculated according to Equation Inormalc=ΣInormalcΣ(Inormalc+Inormala)in which I c and I a are the integrated intensities of crystalline reflexes and amorphous reflexes, respectively. The phase composition of the C/C‐SiC was identified through silicon uptake and by XRD measurements as described elsewhere . Powdered C/C‐SiC composites were measured in a glass capillary (diameter 0.5 mm) at a scanning rate of 0.2° min −1 and a 2θ range of 20° to 80°.…”

“…In view of their prolonged curing cycles, however, alternative polymeric matrices such as pitch, poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) or poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) have been used, too. These polymers also allow for high carbon yields after carbonization . Generally, the polymeric matrix does not only influence carbon yields but is also essential for the fiber‐matrix bonding in the CFRP since it influences the microstructure of the CFRP and, after carbonization, of the resulting carbon–carbon (C/C) preform.…”
