Influence of Thymopentin on Antibody Response, and Monocyte and T Cell Function in Hemodialysis Patients Who Fail to Respond to Hepatitis B Vaccination

Abstract: We investigated the influence of thymopentin as an adjuvant for hepatitis B vaccination on in vitro monocyte and T cell function and in vivo antibody response in a prospective, placebo-controlled double-blind trial in 20 low- and nonresponders to hepatitis B vaccination on chronic hemodialysis. 50 mg thymopentin was given subcutaneously twice per week for 3 weeks, followed by 1 intramuscular injection of 40 μg HB-Vax and 3 subsequent injections of thymopentin. After 1 month, the patients were boostered with 40… Show more

“…Lately, there have been signals [16] that the recombining DNA vaccine is more effective in comparison with the plasma compound vaccine. As far as we know, the anti-FI BV vaccination with plasma compound vaccine, associ ated with thymopentine, does not give results worth con sidering, in accordance with others [13,14], on the other hand, we think that the treatment made up of anti-HBV vaccine and recombining DNA plus thymopentine deser ves further studies.…”

“…Unfortunately, statistics show that the number of nonresponders among the patients who are on hemodialysis is very high, most probably owing to the immunological deficiency caused by uremia [I I]. I n order to overcome this situation, vaccination against HBV, includ ing immunostimulating drugs, has been proposed [6,8,14,15], The primary objective of the study was to compare some of these treatments, including an immunostimulator, such as thymopentine, with a control group treated without immunostimulators [7,9, 10, 12,14,17],…”

“…Grob et al [17,18] used interferon and thymopeptin as an adjuvant for hepa titis B vaccination in non-and low-responder popula tions. Influence of thymopentin on antibody response, monocyte and T-cell function in HD patients who fail to respond to hepatitis B vaccination was also looked into by Dumann et al [19] while Scnnedel et al [20] found that treatment with recombinant human erythropoietin in creases antibody titers after hepatitis B vaccination in dialysis patients. The route of administration is again important.…”
