Influence of trawling activity on the breeding ecology of a threatened seabird, Audouin's gull Larus audouinii

Abstract: The ~nfluence of a trawling moratorium on the breedlng ecology of Audouin's gulls (Larus audouinii Payraudeau) was investigated during 1992 and 1993 in the largest colony of the species in the world (70% of total population), at the Ebro Delta, NE Spain. western Mediterranean. In this colony, Audouin's gull behaves partly as a scavenger following the trawling fleet and exploiting fishing discards. Each year, the trawling moratorium affected different breeding stages of the species: in 1992 it overlapped with p… Show more

“…The only two parameters assumed to be affected by food were the proportion of emigrants (higher when food availability was lower; see § 3) and fecundity (positively associated with food availability; e.g. Oro et al (1996a). We only included a probability to emigrate for younger breeders (3-4-year-old birds) to reduce complexity of the matrix, because this parameter sharply decreased at older ages (see § 3).…”

“…Breeding gulls intensively exploit trawler fleet discards, and food availability per capita during the rearing period is positively related to improved chick body condition and higher reproductive success [25,40]. We show here that food availability per capita for breeders during rearing also improves future survival of newborns.…”

“…Climatic conditions during first winter also influenced juvenile survival. Positive NAO is associated with the strengthening of the African coast upwelling and increasing the availability of small pelagics [38][39][40]. Therefore, higher food availability during first winter period improves juvenile survival.…”

“…This exploitation has enhanced the breeding performance of gulls and influenced its foraging ecology (e.g. Oro, 1995a;Oro et al, 1996). Nevertheless, little is known about the foraging range and activity budget of individual Audouin's gulls and the influence of sex and breeding status on the individual foraging behaviour in relation to fisheries.…”
