Influence of uniform magnetic field on elastic modulus in polyacrylamide ferrogels with embedded nickel nanoparticles

Abstract: Polyacrylamide ferrogels with embedded nickel magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized by radical polymerization in water. The elastic modulus of ferrogels was measured under unidirectional compression in a uniform magnetic field with a strength of 0, 165, 220 and 275 Oe. With an increase in the content of nickel particles in ferrogel from 0 to 5.3% by weight, the elastic modulus in zero magnetic field increased by 60%. The application of magnetic field parallel to the direction of compression resulted in the i… Show more

“…The blending method consists on a sequential preparation of the components, starting with the synthesis of the magnetic nanoparticles, which are then mixed with hydrogel precursors, and followed by polymerization [28]. Mikhnevich and coworkers [180] developed poly(acrylamide) ferrogels through the blending method. The authors used free radical polymerization of the monomer acrylamide and N,N'-methylene-bis(acrylamide) as crosslinking agent under the presence of magnetic nickel nanoparticles.…”

“…[21]. In PAAm ferrogels with nickel nanoparticles it was shown [22] that the elastic modulus of ferrogels linearly depended on the content of the embedded nickel nanoparticles. The applied magnetic field 270 Oe in the parallel direction to the compression increased the elastic modulus by 10% while the application of the magnetic field in the transverse direction decreased the modulus.…”

“…In our previous works [20][21][22] we have studied PAAm ferrogels with embedded iron and nickel nanoparticles, which were synthesized by the high-power pulsed physical dispersion by the electrical explosion of metal wire (EEW) [23]. The magnetostriction in the uniform magnetic field and the compression modulus of ferrogels were characterized.…”
