Influence of Unscheduled Random Public Bus Stops on Transit Travel Time

Abstract: Transit Travel time can affect to a large extent the service reliability, operating cost, and system efficiency. This research paper aims to study the negative impact of the unscheduled random public bus stops on travel time for a particular bus route in Cairo, Egypt. These unscheduled stops became a usual behavior for Cairo Public buses, which affects more than four and a half million daily users of this transportation service inside Cairo. In this study, a comprehensive research plan was designed to collect … Show more

“…As a disadvantage of the routeing system in many large cities, unplanned stops in public transport are noted. Elhabiby studied the impact of such stops on the quality of service in the city of Cairo and developed a comprehensive plan to ensure the use of GPS data loggers and bus tracking [8]. The location of scheduled and unscheduled stops, speed, and travel time were taken as primary indicators.…”

“…One way to reduce the minibus transit time due to unscheduled random stops is to devise the means of minimizing the recurring stops and dwell time during the stop. This would eventually improve the system efficiency and reliability to a large extent [19]. In order to devise an approach towards minimizing the problems associated with the minibus public transport system in our cities, especially, those relating to unscheduled stops and dwell times; it is desirable to explore the current operating characteristics of the system and equally evaluate the influence of these variables on the transit time.…”
