Influence of urbanization and tourist activities on the water quality of the Potrero de los Funes River (San Luis – Argentina)

Abstract: A study of the water quality of the Potrero de los Funes River (San Luis - Argentina) was carried out in order to evaluate the possible effect of the anthropogenic activities on the river developed in the homonymous town. Samples were collected during the period March 2000-November 2005 at three selected sampling sites (RP(1), RP(2) and RP(3)). Different physicochemical and bacteriological parameters (turbidity, pH, conductivity, suspended solids, alkalinity, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, chlorides, n… Show more

“…The present paper uses the WQI index to express the quality of water and is the major indices used to assess the pollution and one of the effective ways to create awareness among the public. Quality of water is defined in terms of its physical, chemical, and biological parameters (Almeida, 2007). Water quality index allows for a general analysis of water quality on many levels that affect a stream's ability to host life and whether the overall quality of water bodies poses a potential threat to various uses of water (Akkaraboyina and Raju 2012).…”

“…Also in that same direction, Teng et al (2011, p. 658) have ascertained that "[...] the most direct interaction between human activities and the surface water quality took place in the city and its areas surrounding the water." This is due to multiple factors, especially those linked to disorganized economic, industrial and urban development, which, combined with uncontrolled demographic growth, cause greater water consumption and contamination by populations (Almeida et al, 2007;Brilly et al, 2006). Furthermore, the relationship between water quality and the urbanization process in cities and urban centers is not a new one, and many correlations have already been established.…”

“…The COD with BOD correlation can be explained by the fact that BOD represents labile organic matter which undergoes biotic decomposition and is a part of COD. COD describes total organic matter content, which is oxidised by a strong oxidant (Almeida et al 2007). A positive correlation of 0.70 between BOD and COD might suggest that regardless the season of sampling relation between these two variables is constant.…”
