“…In addition to the carcinogenic action on lung tissue, known since the early work of Nettleship and Henshaw (1943), urethane has recently been found to have an initiating action in skin carcinogenesis (Salaman and Roe, 1953;Graffi et al, 1953) as well as the property of enhancing leukaemogenesis by methylcholanthrene, oestrogenic hormones, X-rays, or viruses (Kawamoto et at., 1958;Berenblum andTrainin, 1960, 1961;Chieco-Bianchi et al, 1963). Moreover, the experimentation on newborn or infant mice (Pietra, Rappaport and Shubik, 1961;Fiore-Donati et al, 1961;Liebelt, Yoshida and Gray, 1961;Doell and Carnes, 1962; Klein, 1962) offered an opportunity to establish a further broadening of the oncogenic properties of urethane, which is now considered as a multipotential carcinogen not only for mice (Tannenbaum and Silverstone, 1958) but also for hamsters (Toth, Tomatis and Shubik, 1961) and rats (Tannenbaum et al, 1962).…”

“…However, ethyl carbamate did not affect or only slightly affected cell-mediated immunity (DiMarco et al, 1972;Lapp6 and Steinmuller, 1970;Luster et al, 1982;Parmiani, 1970). Ethyl carbamate did not affect the resistance of mice to encephalomyocarditis virus infection, but increased the incidence of induced leukemia (Chieco-Bianchi et al, 1963). Administration of ethyl carbamate (200-400 mg/kg) for 14 days to mice reduced splenic and thymic weight and increased splenic myelopoiesis.…”

“…Long range studies have also shown urethan to be carcinogenic (TANNENBAUM and SILVERSTONE, 1958;HESTON et al, 1960;TOTH et al, 1961;DE BENEDICTIS et al, 1962;TANNENBAUM et al, 1962;DELLA PORTA et al, 1963) and leukemogenic (FIORE-DONATI et al, 1961 ;VESSELINOVITCH and MIHAILOVITCH, 1966). In addition, it increases the susceptibility to leukemia of mice inoculated previously with Graffi virus (CHIECO-BIANCHI et al, 1963) and it depresses interferon production (DE MAEYER-GUIGNARD and DE MAEYER, 1967).In attempts to-induce leukemia in cattle, urethan has been given to uninoculated newborn calves (HATZIOLOS, 1970) and to newborn calves previously inoculated with extracts derived from bovine lymphosarcoma (BLS) masses (HATZIOLOS, 1968(HATZIOLOS, , 1971(HATZIOLOS, a, 1971 or murine lymphosarcoma (MLS) material (HATZIOLOS, 1968, 1971 a, 1972). The results from these studies were promising. To increase knowledge concerning the pharmacodynamics of urethan in adult cattle, high but sublethal doses were given parenterally and this paper describes the clinical manifestations and the effects of urethan on the blood constituents of these animals.…”
