Influence of variability of water content in different states on electromagnetic waves parameters affecting accuracy of GPR measurements of asphalt and concrete pavements

Abstract: In the paper a water content effect in various states on the variability of the electromagnetic waves parameters is discussed. This variation can affect accuracy and repeatability of asphalt and concrete pavement thickness estimation with GPR method. In case of asphalt pavements, tests were carried out using the air-coupled 1.0 GHz antenna and included three approaches: two on asphalt road and one of asphalt slabs. In the case of concrete slabs, tests were carried out using a ground-coupled 1.6 GHz antenna on … Show more

“…However, as already mentioned, the result of determining the dielectric constant, as it is calculated based on the amplitude of the wave reflected from the surface, strictly depends on the conditions on the surface. In the presence of a water film on the surface, dielectric constants calculated based on the amplitude of the wave reflected from the surface increase, which was confirmed by research by the authors of this publication in the paper [ 24 ] (as a result of the presence of a water film on the asphalt pavement resulting from a small rainfall, an increase in dielectric constant from about 6, determined on a dry surface, to 9 determined on a wet surface was observed).…”

“…In recorded images (radargrams), the electromagnetic waves that were reflected from the boundaries between deposits characterized by different values of their dielectric constant εr are analyzed [8][9][10][11][12][13]. The 'quality' (reflection strength, amplitude) recorded on radargrams and the depth range depends on the contrast of the electrical properties between the two media [14][15][16]. Deposits or materials with a high dielectric constant can be distinguished based on the attenuation of the electromagnetic wave.…”
