Influence of water hardness on acid dyeing with silk

Abstract: In this paper, the effect of water hardness, expressed in CaCO 3 equivalent, on the dyeing silk with acid dye under acid, alkaline and isoelectric point dyeing conditions was studied by zeta potential method. Under acid condition and in the presence of calcium ion, the positive zeta potential of silk was found to decrease with a reduction in the dye adsorption. Such a phenomenon might be due to the presence of cation which increased the dyeing potential barrier at the interface between fibre and dye solution. … Show more

“…As the isoelectric point of fibroin is 3.8, 23 the fabric was positively charged at pH 3. This was due to an increased protonation of the amino groups in silk protein, whereas carboxyl groups were essentially non-ionized at lower pH.…”

“…K / S values in the range of 400–700 nm were measured based on eq 1. 3 A higher K / S value represents better color strength of the dyed substrates. K / S sum values were obtained by the sum of K / S values obtained over a wavelength of 400–700 nm.…”

“…Water hardness can be regarded as the amount of calcium and magnesium salts presented in water, and it is expressed as of the calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) equivalent. 3 The unit of measurement is parts per million (ppm). If the amount of hardness in water is less than 60 ppm, it is regarded as soft water.…”
