Influence of water movements and other factors on distribution and transport of heavy metals in a shallow Bay (Canada)

Abstract: Concentrations of heavy metals and cyanide in water and sediments were determined from December 1974 to February 1976 in Yellowknife Bay situated in northern Canada. The bay receives a continuous discharge of liquid waste effluents from an operating gold mine. Arsenic reached a maximum concentration of 3100 mg kg(-1) in sediments near the waste source and decreased to minimum of less than 12 mg kg(-1) moving away from this area; corresponding ranges for Pb, Cu, Zn, Hg, and Fe were 13-800 mg kg(-1), 45-785 mg k… Show more

“…Trace metals Concentrations of trace metals (Zn, Pb and Cd) in all water samples did not indicate water pollution (Table 4), which is in agreement with the results obtained by Moore (1981), Đumija et al (1989), Čoga (1998) and Šimunić et al (2002). Different mean concentrations of Zn and Cd were recorded both between years and between different aquatic bodies.…”

“…Concentrations of heavy metals in drainage water did not indicate pollution (Table 10), which is in agreement with the results obtained by Moore (1981) and Moore and Sutherland (1981), Ðumija et al (1989) and Èoga et al (1998). Different average Zn concentrations were recorded in the three-year trial period (the same may be assumed for Pb and Cd, due to detection limit flame AAS) per years and per drainage system variants.…”

“…Higher concentrations of arsenic have been measured in sediments near the mouth and adjacent areas south of Baker Creek. Sediments and metals have been shown to accumulate in the shallow waters around Latham Island in Back Bay (Moore 1989;Mudroch et al 1989).…”
