Influence of wind and rain environment on operational safety of intercity train running on the viaduct

Abstract: Purpose Based on the aerodynamic loads and dynamic performances of trains, this study aims to investigate the effect of crosswinds and raindrops on intercity trains operating on viaducts to ensure the safe operation of intercity railways in metropolitan areas. Design/methodology/approach An approach coupled with the Euler multiphase model as well as the standard k-ɛ turbulence model is used to investigate the coupled flow feature surrounding trains and viaducts, including airflow and raindrops, and the numer… Show more

“…Strong crosswinds can significantly increase the aerodynamic lateral force and lift forces that act on a running train, so they generate a larger rolling moment Yang et al, 2022) and increase the likelihood of derailment or overturning (Yang et al, 2023;Chen and Ni, 2022). This seriously affects the running safety of trains (Gao et al, 2021), especially on special wind-prone sections such as viaducts and embankments (Tomasini et al, 2014;Olmos and Astiz, 2018;Zeng et al, 2023;Han et al, 2022a). In Xinjiang, China, strong winds have caused more than 30 train accidents since 1960 (Liu et al, 2022).…”
