Influence of zinc levels and Nrf2 expression in the clinical and pathological changes in patients with diabetic nephropathy

Abstract: Objective We investigated the correlation between zinc levels and Nrf2 expression and potential effects on the clinicopathology of patients with diabetic nephropathy (DN). Methods We selected 30 patients with DN, diagnosed via renal biopsy at our hospital from March 2018 to November 2019, and enrolled 30 healthy individuals from a medical examination center as the control group. Patients with DN were divided into normal-zinc and low-zinc groups. We… Show more

“…Just one study investigated the expression levels of Nrf2 in patients with DKD. 11 In this study, in series of 30 patients with DKD, Nrf2 levels were reduced as compared with healthy individuals and were associated with reduced levels of serum zinc. In the present study, Nrf2 levels were selectively reduced in patients with DKD but similar in patients with diabetes without DKD and in controls, suggesting that this factor impacts on kidney damage in DKD.…”

“…Notwithstanding its fundamental role in oxidative stress processes and its potential relevance in kidney damage in experimental models,6 Nrf2 gene expression levels have been largely overlooked in clinical research in patients with type 2 diabetes. Just one study investigated the expression levels of Nrf2 in patients with DKD 11. In this study, in series of 30 patients with DKD, Nrf2 levels were reduced as compared with healthy individuals and were associated with reduced levels of serum zinc.…”

“…In addition, the degree of mesangial expansion, the incidence of K-W nodules and capillary micro-aneurysms were also found to be more severe and signi cant in the kidneys of patients in the low-Zn group than in the normal-Zn group [21]. Our study revealed that plasma Zn levels were lower in patients with DN than those in healthy controls, consistent with the ndings of Feng et al [10,21,22]. Moreover, patients with lower Zn levels had higher in ammatory factors in the renal tissue and signi cantly more urinary protein excretion, indicating more severe renal injury.…”

“…Diabetic patients, in particular, require an adequate level of zinc to ensure Nrf2 activation, which protects them against diabetes-induced oxidative damage to their bones and several other organs [141,142].…”
