In order to contribute to the management of small-scale trawling fishing of the Xiphopenaeus kroyeri shrimp, the aim of this study was to evaluate the local ecological knowledge (LEK) and the conservationist attitudes of artisanal fishers in four fishing communities along the central Brazilian coast. This study was based on 80 ethnographic interviews conducted in two communities are in the state of Bahia (Santa Cruz Cabrália and Barra de Caravelas) and two communities in the state of Espírito Santo (Barra Nova and Anchieta). The fishers present knowledge compliance with literature, except in aspects reproductive of the shrimp and are willing to exchange knowledge with researchers. The mean attitude index of the fishers was 0.65. Education activities should focus on the reproductive biology of shrimp to include fishing communities in the drafting of legislation about closed season period, as this issue is directly related to possible divergences between fishers do not adhere to them. The results suggest that, dialogue and knowledge exchange is necessary among the stakeholders, including the fishers, scientists and managers, who are responsible for the elaboration of management measures.

A pesca artesanal marinha é uma atividade que frequentemente expõe pescadores artesanais ao risco de morte devido às condições meteoceanográficas adversas. Portanto, é urgente formular políticas públicas para solucionar esses problemas. Para minimizar os riscos, os pescadores, durante os dias de trabalho,realizam observações etno-oceanográficas que permitem identificar os dias seguros à prática da atividade. Neste sentido, o objetivo do estudo é compreender o comportamento de pescadores artesanais com base nas condições meteoceanográficas de ondas (altura e direção) e ventos (intensidade e direção), verificando como tais condições interferem na rotina da pesca artesanal no distrito de Farol de São Thomé, município de Campos dos Goytacazes, estado do Rio de Janeiro, Sudeste do Brasil. Entre os meses de junho e agosto de 2018, foram realizadas 80 entrevistas guiadas por questionário semiestruturado, além da realização de observação direta da comunidade pesqueira. Tais previsões foram disponibilizadas pelo Centro de Previsão de Tempo e Estudos Climáticos do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (CPTEC/INPE). O diário de campo foi utilizado para registro da quantidade de embarcações atracadas, o que permitiu avaliar interferências das condições meteoceanográficas nos dias de pesca. Na região de estudo, existem 160 embarcações de pesca, de acordo com os registros da Colônia de Pesca Z-19. No dia em que a altura de ondas variou de 0,6 m a 0,7 m, poucas embarcações (7,5%; n = 12) estavam atracadas. Quando a altura de ondas variou de 1,2 m a 2,1 m, muitas (70,6%; n = 113) embarcações estavam atracadas, principalmente embarcações menores (até 10m). Dessa forma, observações etno-oceanográficas são decisivas para a prática da pesca, pois, em dias de condições adversas, a atividade é suspensa devido ao maior risco de acidentes. Portanto a etno-oceanografia influencia na gestão de riscos que pescadores artesanais são submetidos durante as jornadas de trabalho.

Sea turtle strandings along a semiarid coast in the western equatorial Atlantic

For decades, the Brazilian north-east coast has been a recognized feeding area for five sea turtle species. However, it still lacks information about stranding patterns. A decade of a beach monitoring programme (from 2010–2019) provided information on the composition, abundance and spatio-temporal distribution of stranded sea turtle species along a semiarid coast in the western equatorial Atlantic. A total of 905 individuals of four species were recorded in a route of ~130 km. The most stranded group was the juvenile green turtles (Chelonia mydas), followed by Lepidochelys olivacea, Eretmochelys imbricata and Caretta caretta. The strandings present a seasonal and geographic pattern, and therefore any conservation measure to be implemented must consider these patterns. Also, the possible occurrence of fibropapillomatosis tumours calls for additional studies to understand its causes. Lastly, stranded sea turtles eventually show marks of fishery interaction, which indicate the need for environmental education programmes with fishing communities.
