“…The secretion of several pituitary hormones -e.g. adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, prolac tin, p-endorphin -is partly regulated by serotonergic inputs [Lai and Martin, 1980;Ganong, 1984;Martin and Reichlin, 1987], It was posited that altered responses to a serotonin agonist challenge test during depression could reflect central dysfunctions in one or more steps in sero tonin synthesis, storage, release or receptor function [Meltzer et al, 1984;Maes et al, 1987], Recently, significant increases in ACTH, cortisol and prolactin secretion after loading with L-tryptophan or 5-hydroxytryptophan were detected in major-depressed patients with melancholia [Meltzer et al, 1984;Koyama and Meltzer, 1986;Maes et al, 1987Maes et al, , 1989c.
