The NBR 7190:1997 "Design of Timber Structures" provides the procedure for several mechanical tests, and among them, the Static bending test for Modulus of Elasticity (Em) and Conventional Value of Strength (fm) determinations. It is common to characterize wood batches with a small number of specimens, what makes it difficult to perform an estimative test for rupture determination, and afterwards, to carry out the loading cycle for Em estimation. In these cases, instead of Force parameters, Deflection parameters are used for the loading cycle. This paper aims to identify a pattern between Force and Deflection parameters by investigating the Force vs. Deflection curve of the static bending test of wood specimens. According to results, there is a well pronounced pattern between Force and Deflection parameters in the linear part of the Force vs. Deflection curve, and based on this, we proposed a linear regression model between logarithm values of the force percentage (in relation to the rupture) and the denominator of the span value (as a Deflection parameter), resulting R2 equal to 97.41%. This result makes the conduction of the static bending test easier in specialized laboratories for testing of wood.

For safety reasons, wood strength values, essential for structural dimensioning, are calculated based on the characteristic value, which corresponds to the 5% percentile of a given probability distribution model. For small samples, the Brazilian normative document ABNT NBR 7190 establishes an estimator of the characteristic wood strength, which can provide a significantly different result from the characteristic value coming from a suitable model of probability distribution. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the best probability distribution model (normal, lognormal, Weibull, and exponential) and the subsequent calculation of the characteristic value indicated by ABNT NBR 7190 (1997), allowing to evaluate its accuracy, being also investigated two relationships between characteristic values of the simplified characterization condition for woods of species already known. The best adhesion model was the normal model, which resulted in values statistically equivalent to the characteristic values according to ABNT NBR 7190 (1997). Among the evaluated relationships, the obtained results were significantly higher (up to 92%) when compared to those estimated by ABNT NBR 7190 (1997).

RESUMO As madeiras de Pinus apresentam características indesejáveis às quais podem ser atenuadas com a aplicação de tratamentos, no qual é destacado a furfurilação. Sendo assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da impregnação de álcool furfurílico nas propriedades físicas e mecânicas da madeira de Pinus elliottii. Para tanto, foram utilizados 4 tratamentos: controle e com diferentes cargas de álcool furfurílico (10%, 25% e 50%). Determinaram-se às propriedades tecnológicas conforme descrito nas normas ASTM D 2395-17 (2017) e ASTM D 143-94 (2014). Verificou-se que para as propriedades mecânicas, a resistência à compressão paralela às fibras, em que o parâmetro MOE teve um acréscimo significativo para todos os tratamentos em relação ao grupo controle, em destaque especial para o tratamento (TF25%), para o MOR obteve-se valores superiores, porém sem diferenças significativas. Em relação a dureza Janka, a tensão máxima no plano anatômico transversal, constatou-se valores superiores se comparados ao controle, com destaque o tratamento (TF50%), o qual demonstrou maiores valores com diferença significativa. Para o plano tangencial não foram constatadas diferenças significativas, se mantendo praticamente constantes os valores médios entre os tratamentos e o controle. Para flexão estática, MOR e MOE, não se observaram diferenças significativas, sendo essas propriedades analisadas com testes ANOVA com significância de 5%. Com isso pode-se concluir que a impregnação com álcool furfurílico foi eficaz, devido às melhorias de desempenho mecânico observado. Visto o potencial da furfurilação empregada na madeira com base nestes resultados, sugere-se mais pesquisar neste campo de modo a fomentar maiores informações sobre a utilização deste tratamento em madeira.
