Influencing prototropy by metal ion coordination: supramolecular transformation of a dynamer into a Zn-based toroidal species

Abstract: The work provides a previously unknown example of the desymmetrisation of an organic component resulting from the metal-ion induced tautomerisation which led to the generation of a new type of toroidal coordination species at a solid–liquid interface.

“… 2 Both pyridine and polypyridine ligands are good neutral donors of mono- or multidentate nature, and their coordination properties can be relatively easily altered by substitution with electron-donating or -withdrawing groups. 3 The structural and electronic modifications achieved by the functionalization of heterocyclic rings enable modulation of the metal coordination sphere, which can lead to improvement of the desired properties and potential applicability. 4 Furthermore, pyridine and its derivatives can be utilized as model units for research on important biomolecules such as nicotine, pyridoxine, or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP).…”

“…Among the various types of supramolecular linkages employed in the generation of complex assemblies, coordination and hydrogen bonds are the most widely employed [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ]. It is worth noting that despite the incredible progress made in this area of chemistry in recent years, the simultaneous application of both these bonds for the generation of topologically non-trivial supramolecular architectures remains challenging, especially with the use of highly labile metal ions, such as Ag(I) [ 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ].…”
