Influencing the Electron Density of Nanosized Au Colloids via Immobilization on MgO to Stimulate Surface Reaction Activities

Abstract: Heterogenization of colloidal gold on MgO is demonstrated to facilitate its catalytic surface reactivity. We show that the electron density on Au influenced by its immobilization on MgO along with the ensued metal-support interaction is one of the key parameters to obtain high activity. As elucidated by X-ray absorption spectroscopic (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near-edge structure, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure) studies, the presence of well-dispersed nanosized Au on MgO … Show more

“…Nitroaromatic compounds are among the specific anthropogenic contaminants . Due to high stability and water solubility, the elimination of this class of compounds has always been a significant issue. , Selective nitroarene reduction to amines is one of the most important and most employed catalytic reactions in organic synthesis and industrial chemistry. , Functional aromatic amines are raw materials and significant intermediates in the chemical manufacturing of dyes, pigments, herbicides, agrochemicals, cosmetics, and other chemicals. One of the most commonly utilized model reactions to assess the efficiency of a metal-based catalyst is the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol in an aqueous medium . The highest yield in this reaction is obtained in the presence of catalysts based on noble metals, e.g., Au, Ag, Pd, and Pt …”
