In research settings in the Eastern Gangetic Plain, Conservation Agriculture (CA) reduces operational costs, including cost for machinery, labour and fuel, while increasing yields, profit and soil organic carbon. However, the impact of the CA practices when adopted by smallholder farms on their crop productivity and farm profitability in this region is not well understood. In three locations in Rajshahi and Thakurgaon districts, Bangladesh, where previous on-farm CA research and demonstrations had been focused, we assessed the adoption and impacts of CA technologies on 135 farms compared to 270 non-adopters. While the CA technology adoption is still ongoing in the study areas, those farmers who practiced CA technology decreased human labour by up to 34%, seed use by 31%, fertilisers by 6%, pesticides by 32%, and total cost of production up to 10% while cultivating lentil, mustard, maize and wheat. The respective increases in crop yield and net profit were up to 28% and 43%, respectively. Propensity score matching (PSM) methods further confirmed that CA technology adoption had significant impacts by increasing crop yield, reducing variable costs, and increasing adopters’ net income. Given the striking on-farm benefits of CA for smallholders in the EGP, programmes to expand the availability of minimum tillage planters, provide training to local service providers on CA methods, and the use of smart incentives should be evaluated to assist farmers to adopt CA seeding machinery and associated agronomic practices.

Sustainable development goals as a tool for strategic planning in communities: a bibliometric analysis of research

Nowadays, the balanced development of any territorial unit should be based on the concept of sustainable development. As a result of its significant expansion, the goals of sustainable development began to be used at the level of strategic and operational documents, which in the context of decentralization is reflected at the level of individual territorial communities. This article is devoted to bibliometric analysis of the scientific papers from the Web of Science and Scopus, which deals with the topic of sustainable development in local communities as elements of strategic planning. To do this, we used the VOS viewer, Scopus, and Web of Science tools, which made it possible to identify major trends (for example, dynamics by year, country, authors, subject area, etc.) and clusters that visually present the obtained information. The following key parameters were also selected for the analysis: published for 1987-2019 years; the language of the paper – English; papers which contain keywords – sustainable development, local communities, and strategic planning. The results indicate a growing role of the chosen topic, which prevails in environmental and social sciences. The bibliometric analysis revealed 8 clusters (Scopus database) and 11 clusters (Vos database) with the central term “sustainable development”. The term “local communities” is also one of the key ones in the analyzed research, which is confirmed by the number and strength of links. The analyzed trends show that sustainable development is increasingly considered at the local level of territorial communities in the context of their planning and development.

Green Brand of Companies and Greenwashing under Sustainable Development Goals

Implementing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and increasing environmental issues provokes changes in consumers’ and stakeholders’ behavior. Thus, stakeholders try to invest in green companies and projects; consumers prefer to buy eco-friendly products instead of traditional ones; and consumers and investors refuse to deal with unfair green companies. In this case, the companies should quickly adapt their strategy corresponding to the new trend of transformation from overconsumption to green consumption. This process leads to increasing the frequency of using greenwashing as an unfair marketing instrument to promote the company’s green achievements. Such companies’ behavior leads to a decrease in trust in the company’s green brand from the green investors. Thus, the aim of the study is to check the impact of greenwashing on companies’ green brand. For that purpose, the partial least-squares structural equation modeling (PLS-PM), content analysis and Fishbourne methods were used. The dataset for analysis was obtained from the companies’ websites and financial and non-financial reports. The objects of analysis were Ukrainian large industrial companies, which work not only in the local market but also in the international one. The findings proved that a one point increase in greenwashing leads to a 0.56 point decline in the company’s green brand with a load factor of 0.78. The most significant variable (loading factor 0.34) influencing greenwashing was the information at official websites masking the company’s real economic goals. Thus, a recommendation for companies is to eliminate greenwashing through the publishing of detailed official reports of the companies’ green policy and achievements.
