Information content of ultraviolet-reflecting colour patches and visual perception of body coloration in the Tyrrhenian wall lizard Podarcis tiliguerta

Abstract: Colour signals are ubiquitous in nature but only recently have researchers recognised the potential of ultraviolet (UV)-reflecting colour patches to function as signals of quality.Lacertid lizards often display UV-blue patches on their flanks and black spots over their entire body, both of which are under sexual selection. They also have a cryptic dorsum and some species have a conspicuous, polymorphic ventral coloration. In this study, we use the Tyrrhenian wall lizard Podarcis tiliguerta to investigate the i… Show more

“…We used the R package ‘pavo’ v. 2.7.1 (Maia et al., 2019) for spectral processing and analysis. We used a smoothing span of 0.2 to reduce spectral noise (Badiane & Font, 2021). As spectra from both red and yellow colors show two reflectance peaks (see Results), we calculated five complementary spectral variables: luminance (i.e.…”

“…To formally test whether red and yellow salamander morphs could be visually discriminated by conspecifics and predators, we applied distance‐based PERMANOVAs on the chromatic and achromatic distances (Maia & White, 2018) using the pairwise.adonis function (Arbizu, 2017; Badiane & Font, 2021). Chromatic and achromatic distances were obtained from the comparison between red and yellow patches using soil as background.…”

“…The synergy of performance integration in sexes might become challenged during reproduction. Males display bright nuptial colouration as a signal to potential mates and competitors (Olsson 1994; Marshall and Stewens 2014; Badiane and Font 2021). While location of the nuptial colouration and its light spectrum reflectance evolves as a conjugation of roles in crypsis from predators and signalling to conspecifics, males tend to be exposed to higher predation risk compared to females (Danchin et al 2008; Stuart-Fox et al 2003; McQueen et al 2017).…”
