Information in environmental data grids

Abstract: Providing homogeneous access ('services') to heterogeneous environmental data distributed across heterogeneous computing systems on a wide area network requires a robust information paradigm that can mediate between differing storage and information formats. While there are a number of ISO standards that provide some guidance on how to do this, the information landscape within domains is not well described. In this paper, we present an information taxonomy and two information components, which have been built … Show more

“…Through metadata, those charged with making data available effectively say to prospective users, 'Here is what you need to know about these data.' In other words, scientific metadata provide the information necessary for investigators separated by space, time, institutions, or disciplinary norms to establish common ground (Hey and Trefethen, 2005;Jones et al, 2001;Lawrence et al, 2009;Michener, 2006;Signell et al, 2008).…”

“…The GODIVA2 system highlights the importance of adopting community standards for describing, sharing and visualizing the environmental data (Lowe et al 2006;Lawrence et al 2009). The use of the WMS standard allows interoperability between GODIVA2 and many other data visualization systems, providing the important ability to overlay and compare data from different sources.…”

“…Documentation and metadata are also terms which can be misunderstood, so an important decision was to define precisely in what part of the metadata spectrum the CIM was intended to lie. Using the taxonomy of metadata introduced in Lawrence et al (2009), which describes -A -archive metadata (intended to primarily describe the data syntax),…”
