“…The study finds that residents who are apathetic towards environmental issues have a lower negative affective response, since they minimise the possible costs and risks of the activity of the companies analysed. Therefore, in line with the literature (Griffin, Dunwoody, and Neuwirth 1999;ter Huurne 2008) our study corroborates the influence of lack of trust in companies on the individual negative affective response.…”

“…Having explained the possible relations that the above factors may have on the need for information, we now analyse the relationships that may appear among them. First, in the relationship between trust and individual affective response, the literature (Griffin, Dunwoody, and Neuwirth 1999;Griffin et al 2004;ter Huurne 2008) defends that affective response is influenced by institutional trust (individual's trust in companies and government). In this research, following McComas (2003, 2008), we consider that trust in companies and trust in public authorities must be dealt with differently, both conceptually and empirically.…”

“…Het is belangrijk om bij de preventiecampagnes in te spelen op de risicobeleving van de doelgroep. Dit lijkt namelijk samen te hangen met de effectiviteit van de preventiecampagnes (Ter Huurne, 2008). Bovendien, alleen het notificeren van NAS-gebruikers is niet voldoende.…”

“…Information seeking has emerged as an important topic in risk communication over the past few years. The active gathering by individuals of personally relevant risk information is increasingly considered an important mediator between risk communication and subsequent risk-related knowledge and behavior (Griffin, Neuwirth, and Dunwoody 1999;Turner et al 2006;Kahlor 2007;Ter Huurne 2008;Ter Huurne, Griffin, and Gutteling 2009;Kievik and Gutteling in press). In this paper, we present two experimental studies that focus on the determinants of man-made risk communication, in the context of risk information seeking.…”
