Infrared absorption of CH3OSO detected with time-resolved Fourier-transform spectroscopy

Abstract: A step-scan Fourier-transform spectrometer coupled with a multipass absorption cell was employed to detect temporally resolved infrared absorption spectra of CH(3)OSO produced upon irradiation of a flowing gaseous mixture of CH(3)OS(O)Cl in N(2) or CO(2) at 248 nm. Two intense transient features with origins near 1152 and 994 cm(-1) are assigned to syn-CH(3)OSO; the former is attributed to overlapping bands at 1154 ± 3 and 1151 ± 3 cm(-1), assigned to the S=O stretching mixed with CH(3) rocking (ν(8)) and the … Show more

“…Considering that CH 3 OSO is the expected product of photolysis and that the vibrational wavenumbers of five observed lines in group A near 2999.5, 2950.4, 1152.1, 1147.8, and 989.7 cm −1 are similar to the values of 2991 ± 6, 2956 ± 3, 1154 ± 3, 1151 ± 3, and 994 ± 6 cm −1 reported for gaseous syn-CH 3 OSO, 17 we contend that lines in group A are likely due to syn-CH 3 OSO.…”

“…Gaseous CH 3 OS(O)Cl at 300 K has an absorption cross section ∼8 × 10 −19 cm 2 molecule −1 near 248 nm. 17 The possible products after photolysis of CH 3 OS(O)Cl at 239 ± 20 nm are expected to be CH 3 OSO + Cl, CH 3 + ClSO 2 , and CH 3 O + ClSO. According to Alligood et al, only the S−Cl fission channel to produce Cl atom and CH 3 OSO radical was observed upon photolysis of CH 3 OS(O)Cl at 248 nm.…”

“…Two bands at 1076 ± 2 and 1280 ± 2 cm −1 were assigned to gaseous CH 3 SO 2 , 26 and two bands at 1154 ± 2 and 994 ± 4 cm −1 were assigned to gaseous CH 3 OSO based on our results using time-resolved FTIR absorption spectroscopy. 48 A band near 1159 cm −1 was tentatively assigned to gaseous CH 3 SO 2 I. 26 There is no information available about ISO 2 or IOSO.…”
